The FCT - Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, one of the nine organic units of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, is placed in the Monte da of Caparica. The FCT is one of the best Portuguese schools in the education of science and engineering, with about 6000 degree students, 220 in Masters and 320 in PHD.

History

The Universidade de Lisboa (UNL) was instituted, through the Decree n.º 402/73 of 11 of August, from the Minister of the Education, Professor  Simão Fertile valley.
The first Director of the UNL, Professor Fraústo Da Silva, president of the Commission, started the institution for a limit of eight thousand. In September of 1974 it was concluded the study of the five scientific areas to develop: natural sciences, social human sciences, arts, technology sciences and medical sciences.
In 11 of November of 1975, Professor Doctor Manuel Laranjeira, was nominated director and completed the Commission with two additional members, the Professors Doctors Jose-Augustus França and Leopoldo Guimarães.

 

 
Still in the provisory premisses, in Olivais, in 1975/76, the degree in Engineering in Computer science was stated.
However, in November of 1977, the Minister of the Education, Professor Doctor Mário Sottomayor Cardia, placed the UNL in four organic units: College of technology sciences (FCT), College of human and social sciences (FCSH), College of Economy (FAITH) and College of medical sciences(FCM).
The Professor Doctor Manuel Laranjeira, as Dean of the UNL, gave ownership to the third Director, Professor Doctor Alfredo de Sousa, who participated in the commission, defined the respective places of installation: the FCT was placed in the Campus of Caparica, the FCSH was placed in the Avenida de Berna, the FAITH in Campolide, the FCM was installed in the Campo Santana and Reitoria was hosted in the Príncipe Real Prince, in Lisbon.
